Join the locals at the Lake Placid Pub & Brewery, where the burger is a must and washing it down with one of the Pub's own brews, like the signature Ubu Ale, is even more mandatory.  8/29/09

Enjoy the snow on skis, snowboards, dogsleds or snowshoes

By Beth J. Harpaz, Associated Press

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — Skating on a frozen lake was fun. So was taking a dogsled ride, snowshoeing to an ice-encrusted gorge and learning how to cross-country ski beneath snowcapped evergreens.

But after spending six hours outside in 5-degree weather, the very best part of visiting Lake Placid was warming up at the Lake Placid Pub & Brewery, washing down nachos and wings with great beer, followed by hot chocolate and — heaven! — s'mores made right at the table.

Apres ski, American-style, it doesn't get much better than that — though soaking in the hotel hot tub a half-hour later wasn't half-bad either.

Nobody goes to Lake Placid just for the food, but it sure was nice to come in from the cold to great restaurants with so many choices under $10. At the Lake Placid Pub & Brewery, I had divine shepherd's pie, like something the English grandmother I never had would have made. A sampler of the pub's fresh-brewed ales — six four-ounce glasses, ranging from light and crisp to dark and stout — was $5.95. The Ubu ale was a favorite of Bill Clinton's when he stopped by to celebrate a birthday a couple of years ago.

We had our pig-out feast of nachos, wings and s'mores on a second visit to the Lake Placid Brewery. The s'mores — marshmallows and chocolate melted in a graham cracker sandwich, using skewers and a Sterno can at the table — were as good as any I've made over campfires.

We never made it to the bobsled or luge facility or the Olympic skating rinks. No doubt they're a lot of fun, but we didn't have time. We were too busy skiing, snowshoeing — and eating.

Lake Placid Pub & Brewery: When it comes to camping experiences, what's more authentic than eating s'mores by the campfire?

The Lake Placid Pub & Brewery offers just that, without the pesky camping.

There's beer as well: choose one of six on the menu, or buy a sampler to get a four-ounce taste of each.

Lake Placid Pub & Brewery in Lake Placid, NY

If you're looking for a run a relaxing place to hide away and relax, and who isn't, Lake Placid Pub & Brewery in Lake Placid, NY is the perfect place. Let's not forget that it's near Mirror Lake, which is only going to add to the beautiful scenic location. It's also very close to the downtown area of Lake Placid.

Among the many other things they're known for, the Lake Placid Pub & Brewery is famous for their award-winning lagers and ales, both of which are fresh and microbrewed. If you've never tried them, you don't know what you are missing. They are delicious and typically the beverage you will get with your dinner or lunch. They do, however, have six hand-crafted beers on tap at all times, so you may have a hard time making a choice.

Your lunch selections are the signature sandwiches they're so known for, their jambalaya, nachos, fish & chips or burgers.  Their dinner specials are a little more fancy and elaborate. Penne Pizzolli and Smothered Steak are two of their very popular dinners. Their menu also has children's specials. If you're not a beer drinker, you will be when you feast your lips on their out-of-this-world beer! Many people love their beverage so much; they take a six-pack home with them for later in the evening when they're relaxing over television. Sample their Frostbite, Moose Island Ale or the Daystar Dunkelweizen, all three of which are favorites of the patrons. President Clinton enjoyed the English Strong Ale when he visited and had some delivered to his home upon his return.

The Lake Placid Pub & Brewery has two floors. The top floor, which is nonsmoking, have a bar and restaurant with a beautiful stone fireplace. Sit back in front of the fire or shoot some pool, the choice is yours. The top floor closes at midnight.

The downstairs is where all the locals stay to enjoy the true Irish brew while they play pool, shoot some darts or play table soccer. The downstairs doesn't close until 3 a.m. and is open seven days a week.

Travels in Paradise

A couple blocks off of Main Street, in a small house overlooking Mirror Lake, is the lower key and local Lake Placid Pub and Brewery, offering lots of excellent brews alongside traditional pub fare.  This place is famous for Ubu Ale, a dark English Strong Ale, but they had a strong seasonal French Farm-style beer while I was there called Biere de Garde that I just had to get a growler of to go.

Good food, great beer and top notch service. The downstairs bar is a great place just to grab a drink, but it is loud. Do not be intimidated when you walk up to the restaurant and you hear the loud music and loud laughter...the downstairs bar is just that...upstairs is a dining room and when the weather is good, outside seating.

The appetizers are decent...the gazpacho is AMAZING and the French Onion soup is on par. Both are made with a beer base which for a foodie like me was an excellent option. I had a burger and Jay had a large tossed salad with a beer based bleu cheese dressing! Do not miss the s'mores!

Don't overlook this great place in Lake Placid!

It's a pub, with beer and pub food, but the food is very good and the beer, well, let's just say that we're going back in a couple of weeks and we are making a stop to drink some Ubu Ale. We went last year and shared the experience with my son and girlfriend. We're coming back this year to do the same.

My wife and I came to this place almost 8 years ago and loved it even then. The view on the deck of Lake Placid is great, breezes coming by, tourists elsewhere, etc.

Liked the home-town feel to this bar and the custom made brews. We visited twice in the past two years. We give it two thumbs up!

We had lunch there as soon as we arrived in Lake Placid. We ate on the deck overlooking Lake Mirror. We shared some chili that was quite nice. My husband was happy that they had some a dark ale and he found it pretty good. I had the steack sandwich which was tender and tasty. My husband had a burger that was really good.

Went here with my wife and kids (aged 9 and 6). Great casual place. Nice beer. Great ribs. Good kids menu and they have s'mores that you roast on a little fire on the table. Cute and fun for the kids.

O.k., first of all you have to keep in mind this is a pub. But it is a great pub. Lake Placid Pub & Brewery brews their own beers (although you can get others) and does a superb job of it. We both had the High Peaks Hefeweizen, a great version of the slightly spicy unfiltered German wheat beer. I also had a pint of the IPA, which was very good if not quite as good as the Hefeweizen: it was a bit darker and heavier than my ideal IPA. We have also had their UBU dark ale (strong English style ale, with 7% alchohol), which is excellent. It and several other of their beers are also available in bottles at the pub, stores, and other restaurants in the area. Most pints, as far as I can remember, were $4 or $4.50! A decent brew pub pint up here in Canada is usually $5.50 or $6.  We arrived in the late afternoon, and got a nice seat on the upper deck overlooking part of Mirror Lake. There was a nice breeze and beautiful fresh air. Our server was very cheerful and efficient. We had an appetizer of hummus and pita, and the hummus was great--spicier than usual but really good. My wife had the pulled pork sandwich ($9 I think), which was delicious if a bit too sloppy. It came with apple sauce and baked beans. I had the fish (Icelandic haddock) and chips. The chips were good, but far too few. The fish was some of the best pub fish I've ever had. The batter was very crisp right down to the fish (no soggy layer between), and the fish was flavourful and moist. This was $10. We never got back, but I wish we had gone there instead of several other places we tried. In a town where tourism has driven up prices to ridiculous levels, L.P.P.&B. is an amazing place.

I've been here a dozen times over the past 5 years, most recently in March 2008. Tuesday is 2-for-1 beers - a great deal for great home brew. Nice restaurant - cleans baths - good food - TVs at the bar and downstairs as well - darts, pool table and foosball downstairs - great conversations with other custiomers.

The burger was big, juicy and cooked to order. Fries were hot & crisp. Great wings too.

Visited Lake Placid with the family for the first time in January 08. Since the pub was near our accomodations, we stopped by for a quick lunch. A local bar is located on the first floor (21 and above only). The pub/restaurant is on the second floor. Not handicapped accessible. Since we visited during a slow week and in the afternoon, the pub was nearly empty. The service was quick and friendly. The menu was family-friendly and reasonable. The menu included a good variety- ranging from burgers, fish & chips to mexican fare. The prices ranged between $5 and $17. The burgers were different and some of the best that we have had for some time. The pub offered a variety of micro-brews and ales. We liked it so much that my wife ordered a burger for take-out dinner later in the week. The pub was crowded at that time but the service and turn-around was still pretty good. Overall, it was good food at a good value.

The Lake Placid Pub & Brewery is one of the highlights of my trips upstate. I'm not a beer drinker but I can't resist their Ubu brew. Food is fresh but takes a while. I don't mind waiting because the scene is comfortable and laid back. This bar is clean and the staff is so friendly. They made me feel like part of the community even though it was obvious that I was a tourist!

There are TV screens but it doesn't take away from the Adirondack themed decor.

This is a gem!

By far the best pub in upstate NY.
This place is great after a long day of skiing or in my case, ice climbing.  Beware the Ubu, their local home brew is so tasty and high in alcohol content it might sneak up on you.
This place is worth the trip even you are not a skier or ice climber.

Great little brew pub!: This is a great local spot! The atmosphere is relaxed and fun, the menu is an eclectic mix of pub fare (wings, burgers, nachos, fish and chips, jambalaya) and signature sandwiches and satisfying daily specials. And the beers are outstanding! The UBU ale is legendary, but many others are worth a pint or two! Try the Moose Island Ale, The Frostbite and the Daystar Dunkelweizen. You'll love them all. And the best part is, you can grab a six pack to take home.
